STARTING FROM SCRATCH
My first driving licence
Starting from scratch? We explain your training options and discuss how theory and driving lessons can fit into your daily life.
More about getting started
Don’t have a driving licence yet? You don’t need to have chosen a training route either. We’ll discuss the car you would like to drive, the requirements that apply to you and how theory and driving lessons can fit around your daily life.
Automatic or manual? We’ll explain B78, B197 and B so you can make an informed choice.
BRINGING PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
I have a licence from another country
Already have a licence? Bring it to your consultation. The driving licence authority decides whether and how it must be converted.
More about licence conversion
Bring your existing licence when you visit us. The country of issue, licence category and your individual circumstances determine whether you need to convert your licence and take any tests.
We’ll help you understand the next steps for your training. The driving licence authority decides on recognition, requirements and your application.
ENGLISH · TURKISH · ARABIC
Which language would you like for driving lessons?
When you’re learning to drive, understanding why matters. Four of our instructors offer practical training in English. Driving lessons are also available in Turkish and Arabic.
Your choice: lessons in German, or optional lessons in a foreign language for an additional charge. We’ll explain the surcharge before you book and agree your preferred language, instructor and available lesson times together.
Important for your test: The official practical driving test is conducted in German, regardless of the language of your driving lessons. We also prepare you for the German driving instructions.
Get comfortable, step by step.
We take your previous experience seriously and explain the procedures you need for your vehicle and your journey on the road.
Your preparation also includes understanding the German terms and instructions used in the practical test. The language of your lessons and the language required in the test are separate matters, and we’ll explain both.
A LICENCE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY
Understand your position.
Then take the right next step.
EU or EEA: Specific recognition rules apply to licences issued in EU and EEA countries. Whether you need to take any action depends on factors including the category, validity and any particular circumstances.
Other countries: Converting your licence may require a theory test and a practical test. Annex 11 to the German Driving Licence Regulations (FeV) provides exemptions for certain countries and categories. A country appearing in the annex does not automatically mean you can exchange your licence without taking a test.
Check your right to drive in good time.
If your licence was issued outside the EU and EEA, your entitlement to drive generally continues for six months after you establish normal residence in Germany. Conditions and exceptions apply; submitting a licence conversion application does not, by itself, extend your entitlement to drive.
If you are unsure whether you are currently allowed to drive, check with the relevant driving licence authority before your next journey.
TRAINING AND TESTS
The right language.
At the right stage.
Theory classes, learning with an app and official tests are different parts of your journey. We’ll explain the options that suit your training.
Theory test
You can take the official theory test in German or in these twelve foreign languages:
English, French, Greek, Modern Standard Arabic, Italian, Croatian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
From 1 April 2027, Kurmanji and Ukrainian are also provided for under section 76a FeV. We’ll confirm your preferred test language with the test centre before registering you for the test.
For learning with Fahren Lernen Max Premium, we’ll discuss the appropriate language version for your account. Your test language is independent of the language used in your driving lessons.
Practical test
The practical driving test is conducted in German, without interpreting into another spoken language. That’s why the key German driving instructions are part of your preparation, even if you take lessons in English, Turkish or Arabic.
Your instructor assesses when your driving skills are ready for the test.
YOUR VISIT
Come as you are.
Bring your questions.
For your first conversation, it’s helpful to bring:
- your original driving licence, if you already have one,
- your questions or any letters from the driving licence authority,
- an idea of what you want to drive, your preferred language and your availability.
We’ll then discuss the documents needed for your application, suitable learning steps and the scope of your training. The documents the authority requires will depend on your individual case.
What happens after your visit?
- Clarify your route: Your first licence, an existing licence or a licence conversion.
- Prepare your start: Go through the documents, theory and learning app together.
- Plan your lessons: Agree your instructor, language and available times.
- Keep learning: Once access is enabled, you can book your own instructor’s available driving lessons yourself in the existing app.
Your questions.
Our next steps together.
Do I need to have a driving licence already?
No. You can work towards your first driving licence with us or visit for advice with an existing foreign licence. We start with your individual situation.
Can I take driving lessons in English, Turkish or Arabic?
Yes. Four of our instructors offer practical training in English. Turkish and Arabic are also available. Lessons in a foreign language are optional and carry an additional charge. We’ll explain the surcharge before you book and agree your instructor and available lesson times together. The official practical test is conducted in German.
Will I need to take tests to convert my licence?
This depends on factors including the country of issue, licence category and the circumstances of your case. Annex 11 FeV provides exemptions for certain countries and categories. The driving licence authority decides which requirements apply to your application.
